BurdaStyle Tulip Sequin Dress

I made this outfit with “Las Vegas” clubbing scene in mind. I had a trip booked to see Avicii at XS Nightclub so a short, glittery dress was at the top of my mind!

Pattern Information

Description: A sweetheart neckline gives a feminine look to this structured dress. The tulip skirt is pleated for structure, so you get a sophisticated look.
Pattern: BurdaStyle Tulip Dress
Fabric: Sequin Bodice & Rayon Skirt

What did you like about the pattern?

I made the skirt and front lining with rayon fabric which stopped it from being itchy from the sequins. The top part of this dress is the BurdaStyle Tulip pattern and as you can see the back didn’t quite fit me well enough. It was also a little hard to get it to sit nicely with the sequin fabric type. This was also the first time I’ve ever sewn with sequins so you can see it’s not all that wonderful.

I think with a few more alterations to the shoulders and back part to get it to sit right would make this pattern work better. Possibly with some stiffer fabrics, such as cotton sateen.

Did you make any changes to the pattern?

Yes, I did actually swap out the skirt pattern on this version. I have created this skirt pattern a number of times so it was one I tried and loved.

Would you recommend this pattern to others?

I think it would depend on your body type if you would choose this pattern. For people with a much larger bust it would certainly fit better, while for myself I had to make a few adjustments. The shoulder part is also a tricky one because this might be one of those patterns where you’re constantly adjusting the shoulders to sit back where they should be. So while it’s great to test out I think it would be worth making those adjustments first to get it to fit your body shape.
