Butterick B5949 Dress

The Butterick 5949 dress has been one of my favourite dress sewing patterns which has also proved wonderful mixing and matching with other dress patterns. I’ve reused the skirt in some of my mash ups, including my Handmade Lace dress. I originally made this dress back in 2013 for a friends wedding and received a lot compliments on the colour and style.

Fabric used

I am a pretty big fan of Spoonflower fabrics, even selling a few designs online myself on my Spoonflower Fabric Shop. You can go through the designs and make a favourites gallery of all the fabrics you love.

The blue water colour fabric in this dress is by Joan McLemore which is one of my favourites. I’ve purchased this pattern a few times for different dresses and every time they come out so pretty.

What did you like about this pattern?

I actually also really loved this dress because the sleeves fit really well, which isn’t typical for these types of patterns including very short, capped sleeves. I say this only because I have wider shoulders, so at times the patterns can pull if they don’t allow for this.

When I looked up the link to the pattern I was surprised that it’s now out of print because it was one of those really amazing patterns that just looked lovely sewn. At this current moment I’ve made about three different versions, shown below.

Did you make any alterations to this pattern?

I didn’t make any alterations to this pattern, however for these versions I did omit the waist band. However, I’ve also made it with the waist band and it still looked amazing. I also think it’s worth doing a test run of this pattern as you might find you end up cutting a smaller size in the top than the bottom.

Would you recommend this pattern to others?

Overall it was a really great pattern and I highly recommend it if you can find it online as a download or a paper copy.
