Charity Sewing – Hearts of Purple

Hearts of Purple Charity

Hearts of Purple charity was setup to help those who have been involved in, or trying to escape Domestic Violence. This charity was sadly started after the brutal murder of Teresa, a mother of four children. Her partner also then committed suicide leaving these four children without any parents.

Domestic violence mainly occurs behind closed doors, so Hearts of Purple foundation was setup to assist males, females, and children who are at risk of being harmed. To read more about this charity please visit About Us – Hearts of Purple.

Why this cause is so important

After being in a ten year emotionally abusive relationship in my 20’s, I am thankful every day that I was able to end that relationship but only with the help and support of my parents. It makes me so sad that others are not as fortunate and may not have the support they need to do this.

One in four women (27%) has experienced violence, emotional abuse, or economic abuse by a cohabitating partner since the age of 15. These charities are more important now than ever to help provide relief and support to those suffering.

Some organisations now offer family and domestic violence leave to help those who need to take time off to get out of bad situations. I know from my personal experience when you’re in these situations you often feel isolated and alone and don’t know where to turn to for help. This could be from not knowing how to explain your situation to others from fear, anxiety, embarrassment, judgement, or just not fully understanding what’s happening to you. I still remember a psychiatrist telling me after I decided to go talk to someone about my experience, “You are so lucky that you got out of this relationship, become some people never do”.

Sewing Project – Toiletry Bag

After looking at the Hearts of Purple donation page I wanted to create something easy that we could all get involved with and sew for this incredible charity. My first thought was creating a toiletry bag and I knew just the pattern. I also went a step further (which you don’t have to do) and went to Kmart and purchased 5 x kits to put into my toiletry bags, costing $10 each.

This included the below:

  • Hair brush ($2)
  • Toothbrush ($1.75)
  • Toothpaste ($2)
  • Lip balm ($2.25)
  • Bath Puff Washer ($2)

Sewing Pattern – No Guts Boxie Pouch

I like using free patterns, so everyone can get involved. I have made this No Guts Boxie Pouch from Sew Chick and Bags a number of times and absolutely love it. It’s has so much space inside and can be used for just about anything.

I ended up making 5 x boxie pouches in all different materials and zipper colours. Each of these include a set of toiletry items shown above.
