McCalls M7740 Wool Tie Back Work Dress

As we start to venture back into work I’m trying to grow my work wardrobe again for some variety. This pattern really stuck out to me as something I could create as a simple but stylish dress. After rummaging through my fabric stash I found this really light-weight wool blend, which worked perfectly. I also opted for the short sleeve version so I could pair my favourite work shirts underneath. Overall, it was such a simple pattern and design and took very minimal time to sew up.

Pattern Information

Pattern: McCalls M7740
Description: Slim fitting basic dress with high neckline and cutout tie back. This includes an invisible zipper on the skirt back.
Fabric: Wool blend with poplin lining

What did you like about this pattern?

I loved how easy this pattern was to trace, cut and stitch out. This is because it had very minimal pattern pieces, so it was a great weekend afternoon sewing project. I really liked the idea of the tie back but when I looked at the pattern it wasn’t really one that I would have worn on it’s own. So merging this into more of a winter dress where I could pair it with my latest work shirts was ideal.

What pattern alterations did you make?

There were no pattern alterations made to this dress or pattern. However, I would probably try and add some extra details to it to make it a bit more unique if I made it again. This could be in the form of binding, trims or even just a more interesting fabric type or colour.

There are some amazing examples of this dress on instagram with some really creative examples in two-toned colour ways. This dress would really suit wool, denim or cotton sateen, which is what I might try for a second version.

Overall, if you’re looking for a really quick project this one would be perfect for summer or winter. I highly recommend it for beginner sewers or for those wanting to whip out something really quickly.
