Butterick 5949 Denim Floral Dress

I’ve had this floral cotton fabric sitting in my stash for a few years now and really wanted to make something nice from it. However, I felt that a dress made completely in this fabric may have been too floral, so I opted for a denim style top and finished it with some lace.

Pattern Information

Pattern: Butterick 5949 Dress
Material: Lightweight Denim top and Cotton Skirt. Fully lined with lace trims around the skirt
Pattern Description: Lined dress has close-fitting, pleated, bias front bodice variations, waistband, and invisible back zipper.

What did you like about this pattern?

I have made this pattern a number of times now and all with different styles. You can see my Green Floral version and my blue watercolour version. I love the top part of this dress with the pleated front and sleeves. It makes for a very flattering fit. Each time I have played with the style of the skirt and this version has a flowly long version, which I love.

What pattern alterations did you make?

The only alteration I did to this dress was make the skirt a bit longer. The bottom layer is not only separated by lace but it has a bit more of a gather to it being an extra layer of fabric.

I also originally put lace around the sleeves but it looked a bit too ‘little house on the prairie” so I removed it. I’m really happy with the overall fit and think maybe another denim only version might look nice too.
