Handmade Lace V-Neck Short Dress

I had a heap of really fun events over summer that I wanted to wear something a bit more stylish to, including to my divorce party! Plus, being single and going out again after ten years I wanted to make something that I really felt girly, sexy and amazing in.

Pattern Information

Dress pattern: Self-Drafted. Inspired by a Hello Molly dress found online.
Fabric: Lace overlay, cotton lining.

What did you like about this pattern?

This was a good challenge for me because I had never worked with lace in the past. I also had never inserted an invisible zipper, which proved to be really easy and perfect for this fabric. I can now say I have mastered putting those in!

The main reason why I made the second black version was to celebrate my divorce party with all of my girlfriends! If anyone has ever been through a similar experience you’ll know how great it is to celebrate the date, since it’s exactly one year after you leave the relationship. I had so many things to be proud of walking away from that relationship. On top of discovering who I am again, working towards new goals and making new friends, I am so much happier and actually look forward to what my future will bring.

Here is a photo of my night out with all my girlfriends wearing this pretty oh la la lace dress. I’d have to say even though it’s been a tough year for me, it’s been completely life-changing and something I will always look back and be thankful for. As in, having the courage to walk away and put myself first, especially when you know you deserve so much more in life.

Would you recommend this pattern to others?

One thing on making lace dresses is to make sure you really pre-wash your fabrics. I found that after a few washes my white dress started to shrink so possibly pre-wash it a few times before cutting it out might help.
